This is a review of the Andy Doig exhibition ‘Love is in the air’ showing at the Ink’d gallery in Brighton though February 2008.
One of the Andy Doig exhibits, part of the Love is in the Air exhibition.
Love is in the air is a brave and daring exhibition. Almost all of the artworks are made out of Neon, and pieces include a neon penis flashing from soft to erect, the word ‘SEX’ emblazoned down a wall and a giant lit up cross.
Perhaps the most interesting piece is the one photographed above, which took me a while before I realised what it was. Clear enough when you look at it as a photo, but when your actually looking at it in real life its flashing on and off making meaning it takes some time to fully take in. After some time I realised it was hands signing something - and on enquiring it turns out they are spelling out the word LOVE. Sometimes, less imediately obvious messages can be very effective.
I wonder if there are other messages in Doig’s work. The penis is sitting in a fire place with neon clouds floating across it. Are they just clouds, is there a message here? Are they connected to the penis? Well, for once, the exhibits look so damn good it doesn’t matter. This is a truly unique exhibition, and its really fun. Unlike more conventional painting on a wall or scultpture, this art literally burns into your retinas. Its very memorable and an ideal way to spend a little time doing something different.
Andy Doig’s exhibition is at Ink-d, open Mon - Sat 11 - 6. If you missed it, go anyway as they always have similarly exciting exhibitions on year round.
