This is a guide to the club Digital Brighton. It lets you know a bit about the venue, how to find it and how to find listings of gigs there.

Introduction

Digital used to be known as The Zap Club and had stayed the way it was for around 20 years. Tired and losing money it closed after a brief reincarnation as Union in 2007, and reopened with an intimate Ian Brown gig as Digital in September 2007. No longer a cheesy dance club it now has live bands, DJ’s, indie nights and more.

Whats it like inside?

The venue looks very fancy, walking down a dark tunnel brings you to a large black room with padded ceiling(?!), the stage is quite small but has an impressive digital backdrop and the bar pulsates with silver light. It must be said, it is very dark in here, but on the left a long room done out in swanky wood and mirrors, well lit and a bit like something you might find onboard a cruise ship lets you see your friends. Or yourself. Both rooms have steps leading to a balconies, theres places to sit up here too.

Can I see?

Unless the place is half full, you’re at the front or very tall then you won’t be able to see much. A big column obscures some of the stage, and the stage is not quite high enough either. You can stand on some steps leading to the downstairs bar, but there’s only room for about 5 people here. Also the weird shape of the place means lots of people end up tucked in odd corners.

Can I sit down?

If you get there early enough you might be able to sit down on the chairs facing the stage on the balcony. Go up the stairs and turn right through the doors away from the bar. Thats the best place to see and sit.

Can you get a drink?

A large bar runs alongside the stage, and there is small bar inside the second room. During the gig the large bar closes which is nice as it keeps the noise down, you can still get drinks from the other room. They are heavily over priced - £4.50 for a bottle of Corona!

Toilets?

The toilets are OK, the gents are by the gig area, ladies must go into the second bar and up the stairs however. There are excellent speakers in the toilets, so you won’t miss a note. If the venue is full, your chances of reaching the toilets are very slim.

Is it easy to smoke?

There is a smoking area at the back of the downstairs bar, its quite easy to get to providing the place isn’t too busy.

Where is it?

Facing the pier, turn right and go down the first slope to the sea front, its the first club you come to down there, by the Honey Club. Its listed as Union on this map.

How can I find out whats on?

Don’t bother, if a band like is playing here, think twice and go only if you think it won’t sell out. If you must go, then make sure you get a good spot and forget about trying to drink. Gigs are listed on myspace.com/digitalbrighton.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a nice club, but its not a place for seeing bands.
