ART: Robert Goff: An Etcher in the Wake of Whistler, Brighton Museum

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Invoking a big name like Whistler might help us find a pathway into the work of a lesser known artist, but it won’t help if that pathway is misleading. I’ve struggled to see much similarity between Robert Goff (1837-1922) the Hove based etcher and James Whistler (1834-1903), the painter whose splashy canvases and book The Gentle Art of Making Enemies outraged the art establishment of the time.

GIG REVIEW: The Besnard Lakes at Brighton Ballroom, 23/11/11

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

The Besnard Lakes probably have an amazing record collection. Shelves of 70s soft-rock rarities, obscure progressive concept albums and original copies of out of press early 90s shoegaze classics.

GIG REVIEW: Cautionhorses / Ragweed / Toe, the Cowley Club, 22/10/11

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Soundwaves Festival, Brighton, 14–17/7/2011

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

From beer to beards, Brighton seems to have a festival of some description every weekend over the summer. Unlike many of them, Soundwaves isn’t an excuse to flog you expensive yet enticing food and drink while a dodgy funk band plays in the background. A registered charity dedicated to experimental sound, it’s supported by local institutions like Brighton University as well as the Arts Council and that bastion of the musical avant-garde, Wire magazine [...]

The Chimney House, Brighton – a review

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Having been to the Chimney House in Seven Dials before, I recommended it to some friends for a nice Sunday roast this weekend. However, we were met by a cacophony of errors, which from the place who once served one of the nicest meals I’ve ever eaten was a real shame. The key to my disappointment [...]

Explanation of temporary absence

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Just a quick note to let any regular readers know that we’ve been snowed under with other work and commitments for the past 4 weeks hence the lack of reviews and updates. We have seen the excellent Spiritualized and My Bloody Valentine in this time, and hoped to review them, but time was against us. [...]
