Barfly Brighton - The Gloucester

Please note - The Barfly Brighton is currently ‘closed for refurbishment’. It may never reopen, word has it the Barfly purchased the old Astoria building down the road. If I hear more new news, I’ll update this page. For now this is historical info.

This is a guide to the Barfly Brighton. It lets you know a bit about the venue, how to find it and how to find listings of gigs there.

The Barfly Brighton

Venue History

The Brighton Barfly used to be known as The Gloucester, and back then it was a typical ‘dive’ with failing club nights and sticky floors. It recently got refurbished and managed to attract more club nights, and was then purchased by the Barfly chain and turned into a regular gig venue.

Can I see?

The venue is a good size, with a raised stage ensuring everyone can see bar the very short. You can also climb up the steps behind the sound desk and get a balcony style view of the stage and audience if you get there early.

Can I sit down?

There are limited seated areas near the stage, although these make it hard to see. To sit and have a drink before or during the gigs though there are plenty of places, there are 3 bar areas.

Can you get a drink?

As its a club, the bar area is close to the stage, and is very spacious. Drinks are readily available at reasonable prices too, plenty of staff and full range of drinks.

God this place was a dive when I lived in Brighton, surprised the Barfly bought it!

I can confirm that Barfly has gutted this venue.. and the latest we have is it will not be reopening due to a noise issue.. It was the council that forced it to shut… Now what is odd, is all shows up til 20 sept 2008 have been cancelled, but not the ones after. so who knows.
