GIG REVIEW: Arbouretum, Luke Roberts, Hush Arbors @ The Latest Music Bar, 1/5/12

The last time I saw bearded Baltimore folk-fuzz-rockers Arbouretum I’d heard nothing by them. I was going by the sporadic but emphatic buzz emanating from certain lantern-toting music buffs in the know who treated the band with the hushed reverence only attained by masters of their craft. The hairy hermits were right. I left stunned [...]

GIG REVIEW: Soccer96, Green Door Store, 24/3/12

An enthralled home-town crowd are packed into the Green Door Store to witness local boys Soccer96 release their self-titled new album into the wild. On one level the band are easy to describe: there’s two of them, one on synths the other on drums. But the musical and avenues they travel are many and varied, [...]

FILM/MUSIC: Vampyr – Steve Severin event, 29/01/12

Walking into a packed foyer, it was nice to see I wasn’t the only one excited by the prospect of Steve Severin, founder member of Siouxsie and the Banshees, performing a soundtrack for ‘Vampyr’ by Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer. It didn’t matter whether the majority of people were there as fans of the Severin, Dreyer or, like me, both.

ART: Where to buy artist-made Christmas gifts in Brighton

Still struggling with the seasonal shopping? It doesn't all have to be trawling through Amazon or fighting the crowds at Churchill Square. Christmas is the perfect opportunity to support the arts and buy something truly special. Here are three of the best places in Brighton to buy creative Christmas gifts.

GIG REVIEW: Cautionhorses / Ragweed / Toe, the Cowley Club, 22/10/11

The gig started with Toe. But before they came on we were subjected to choral, opera and 20s music, which was a pleasant change from the sort of nonsense you often get between bands.

Timber Timbre gig review, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, Brighton, 01/09/2011

"I don't believe in ghosts, but I have seen the demon host." With lyrics like these, who needs harrowing music to convey a sense of the impending apocalypse? But then with instruments sounding this lush, you wouldn't want Timber Timbre to go acapella...

Six Organs of Admittance gig review, Komedia, 11/6/2011

Six Organs of Admittance at Komedia, Brighton 11/6/2011 by Adam Bambury Last time Ben Chasny visited Brighton he had a full band in tow. They blasted the audience with electrified squalls of noisy distortion, focusing on the frequent dissonance that pulses through his extensive oeuvre rather than the equally common moments of sun-dappled beauty. Tonight [...]

Barn Owl gig review, The Hope, 2/5/2011

For a couple of bearded guitarists specializing in droning instrumental soundscapes, Barn Owl have a pretty high profile. Previous releases have been put out by likes of hip noiseniks Not Not Fun. Their most recent release, the brooding and revelatory Ancestral Star, came out on Thrill Jockey.

Liturgy gig review, Hector’s House, 22/04/11

Liturgy are a band that defy conventional categorisation. So much so, they've created their own genre - "pure transcendent black metal". This is no idle boast. Interviews with formidably titled frontman Hunter Hunt-Hendrix reveal an unusual amount of thought has gone into the band - he's written a manifesto focusing on the positive side of chaos and even invented a new kind of drum style, the ‘burst beat’ (more like ‘systems in nature’, apparently).

Abouretum gig review, Jam, 19/03/2011

Where is everybody? It's one hour before Baltimore's finest psych-folk-prog rock combo Arbouretum are due to take the stage in Brighton, and the venue is practically deserted. Only two couples lurk at the back of the low ceilinged room, sat at tables with their drinks and looking more suited to an evening of stand-up comedy rather than the earnest odes to archetypal imagery and psychic wholeness [...]

Crystal Castles Gig Review, Brighton Dome, 17/2/2011

The sheer aural power of Magnetic Man would intimidate many acts who were about to follow them on stage, but then Crystal Castles are in the same league when it comes to having an intensely noisy, distorted, cutting-edge live sound. Usually manic, Alice Glass was slightly inhibited by [.....]

Neon Indian – Psychic Chasms Album Review

Psychic Chasms sounds mischevious; like an adolescent sugar rush; or a young festival-goer meandering around a campsite after their first magic mushroom high.

M83 @ Concorde 2

M83 mix shoegaze, electronica and nostalgic synth-pop into an otherworldy listening experience that should make for a great show at the concorde. I last saw them at Glastonbury back in 2005 and they had a more rocky, guitar-based setup than on record… but their last album “Saturdays = youth” turned away from guitars, so this [...]

Busking in Brighton

More fun and vibrant than a Hare Krishna march, this is The Half Sisters - self appointed “busking queens of Brighton”. Squishing folk and pop together into a cuddly, dancing monster of a band, they've drawn big crowds and a lot of attention playing shows around town...

Glissando Review

A review of Glissando, at the Brighton Freebutt, 2nd February 2009. "Elly May Irving sang, sat at the piano with her eyes closed and seemingly wrapped up in her own world. At the back of the stage Glissando's other half Richard Knox plucked at a guitar, hidden in the shadows with his head bowed. The song, Floods, drew to a close with the whole band... singing the lines together, a haunting crescendo that rang around the half-empty Freebutt"

Iron & Wine at The Corn Exchange, March

Sam Beam recorded the first Iron And Wine album Creek Drank The Cradle using only his guitar, his voice, and some basic home-recording equipment. It wasn’t until third LP The Shepherd’s Dog that Iron And Wine began to sound more expansive. New album Kiss Each Other Clean promises more full-band sounds; first single Walking Close [...]

Review of the Sebastien Tellier gig at Concorde 2, Brighton on Jan 25th. "...Sebastien Tellier at the Concorde was enough to tempt us out into the rain. Mercury Rev live review – Brighton November 2008

Live review of Mercury Rev at The Concorde Brighton in November 2008. A majestic performance, but and unusual one for the Rev, and a return to a former psychedelic sound. Supported by an incredibly rude and arrogant Howling Bells. A great night.

Late of the Pier live review – Brighton Barfly April 9th 2008

A gig review of Late of the Pier, electro teenage sensations who played the Brighton Barfly when the Levis Ones to Watch tour came to town. Not as good live as they are on record, but if you like MGMT, Metronomy or Hadouken! and 80's synths you'll find this band interesting. Videos, photos and more info on the band follow.

The Crucible live review

A live review of The Crucible, who played the Pressure Point Brighton..."This band has an awesome sound…you have to be there to truly experience how massive it is!". The Crucible are a local band, and it seems like they are well worth some attention. Thanks to our guest reviewer Sally Veness for this one.

Lars and the Real Girl film review

Review of the film Lars and The Real Girl, a heart warming study of mental illness and how it effects people in a tight knit community. Not, as some press releases have given the impression, a gross out comedy about a man and a sex doll.

British Sea Power live review

A review of British Sea Power live at Brighton's Digital club in Feb 2008. "The last 20 minutes were inescapably powerful. The cavernous interior of Digital really intensifies things and I left with the thought I’d been feltching Blake Fielder’s swimmers from Amy’s moist jazz pouch."

Lawrence Amazing local act The Diamond Family Archive played local pub The Greys a couple of weeks ago. Thee More Shallows and The Chap gig review

On Sunday 19th April at The Hope, Brighton Guilded Palace of Sin presented the American expansive indie band Thee More Shallows supported by Beck and Bloc Party remixers and electro punk band The Chap. Secret Life – Film Review

Last week channel 4 first screened the film Secret Life starring Matthew Macfadyen as a paedophile just released from prison. The film explores the life of a paedophile from their perspective, and is the first film I have ever seen to portray a paedophile in a somewhat sympathetic manner. That is not to say it [...]

Sunshine and The Lives of Others

Last night I went to The Duke Of Yorks and watched 2 films in a row, just like people did in the past. First you had a B-movie, which was a relatively short low-budget film, often sci-fi or horror. This was followed by the main feature, often a more serious and longer film. The 2 [...]

Brighton Festival

sunn O))) live review

GIG REVIEW: Pelican, The Haunt, 12/4/12

Pelican have been plying their particular instrumental furrow for some time now. As furrows go, it’s a fertile if relatively unchanging one, with something for everyone from the beer swilling metal maniac to the socially awkward post-rock aficionado. Though they touch on many genres, they have an unmistakeable warm, swaggering, chugging sound of their own. [...]

ART: Dreams of Here, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery

Three artists, three rooms, a video interview with the artist in the corner of each. Dreams of Here is an exhibition that invites you to compare working methods and ideas of space, figure and memory.

ART: Robert Goff: An Etcher in the Wake of Whistler, Brighton Museum

Invoking a big name like Whistler might help us find a pathway into the work of a lesser known artist, but it won't help if that pathway is misleading. I’ve struggled to see much similarity between Robert Goff (1837-1922) the Hove based etcher and James Whistler (1834-1903), the painter whose splashy canvases and book The Gentle Art of Making Enemies outraged the art establishment of the time.

GIG REVIEW: The Besnard Lakes at Brighton Ballroom, 23/11/11

Soundwaves Festival, Brighton, 14–17/7/2011

From beer to beards, Brighton seems to have a festival of some description every weekend over the summer. Unlike many of them, Soundwaves isn’t an excuse to flog you expensive yet enticing food and drink while a dodgy funk band plays in the background. A registered charity dedicated to experimental sound, it’s supported by local institutions like Brighton University as well as the Arts Council and that bastion of the musical avant-garde, Wire magazine [...]

Sufjan Stevens gig review, Brighton Dome, 14/05/2011

Sufjan Stevens mesmerised the Brighton Dome last night. There were dancers, balloons, confetti, angel wings and a fluorescent stage show. Behind the band, outsider art-inspired video projections that attempted to send us to a different mental cosmos. The setlist was mainly sourced from his latest album Age of Adz. But there were a few songs from the All Delighted People E.P. as well as older material from Illinois. The night kicked off with a bang when Seven Swans reached its rousing crescendo.

Skindred gig review, Concorde 2, 26/04/2011

A swirling cacophony of noise engulfed a sold out Concorde 2 as Skindred kicked off their 2011 tour in fine style. Their unique kaleidoscope of genres (is there a word to describe the combination of punk, heavy rock and reggae!?!) fused together to create an exhausting night of pogo bouncing, old fashioned moshing and even the retro robot.

Crystal Stilts gig review, Audio, 24/3/11

Jamie Woon Gig Review, Audio, 22/02

Jamie Woon’s atmospheric, soulful pop led him to a place in the BBC’s influential Sound of 2011 poll, and this was reflected in a busy Audio on Tuesday night. Woon’s music shares more than a likeness to fellow finalist James Blake’s more radio friendly output, although Blake’s [....]

Woodpigeon are a great up and coming band from Canada – “Like Calgary’s answer to Sufjan Stevens and his travelling symphonic circus, prairie collective Woodpigeon have a penchant for long-winded song titles (Home As A Romanticized Concept Where Everyone Loves You Always And Forever) and jingly, ramshackle chamber-folk concoctions driven by banjo, glockenspiel, a sprawling [...]

900 Spaces Review

A review of 900 Spaces at The Prince Albert, 19th February 2009. "...All the core components of a good party band are here, from the synths and angelic voice of lead singer Emma Lou, to the style of bassist Joe-Leigh Branton who dances like Franz Ferdinand and the considered pickings of guitarist Adam House. They have a good forthcoming run of gigs and this should tighten the group dynamism further."

Glissando Interview

Interview with Glissando, before their show at the Brighton Freebutt, 2nd February 2009... "Their music could be compared to Efterklang, Bat For Lashes and Godspeed You Black Emperor; it demands patience, but rewards you with an experience that's warm, intimate and soothing to the spirit... sitting in the cosy, dim-lit upstairs bar of the Freebutt, they talked about the tour, their album, and Richard's label, Gizeh"
