The Diamond Hoo Ha Men review

This review is of the Diamond Hoo Ha Men gig at Digital Brighton in December 2007.

Who are the Diamond Hoo Ha Men?

Supergrass.

Who was on stage tonight?

Danny and Gaz from Supergrass, its a trick.

Ratings

Performance

Gaz seemed to be in a bit of a rush as he screeched and screamed his way through 4 new Supergrass songs from the upcoming album Diamond Hoo Ha men, one song we knew (Never done nothing like that before), and a cover of Beat It. After around 20 mins he ran off stage, and that was that.

There was no encore either, which is annoying as according to NME they played Caught by the fuzz in London.

Sound quality

The sound was by far the worst I have ever heard at a gig. The lack of bassist seemed to have caused the sound guys to turn the bass up on Gaz’s guitar rendering it unlistenable. Perhaps that would explain the lack of encore, and claims that the rest of the tour was acoustic.

Between song banter

Apart from explaining that they were going to get experimental, and they would do a Supergrass cover, there was no between song banter at all. I did see Gaz talking to fellow smokers outside after the gig however, which was nice so that gains him an extra point.

Loseyourselfability

I couldn’t even get into the venue it was so crowded so spent the gig stuck in the bar, barely able to see, making it hard to lose myself. I did have an nice chat with a friend though…
3/5

Audience

Everyone came to this gig, everyone I know in Brighton, and everyone else. This meant you couldn’t breathe inside the club, let alone move. As a result, quite a few people seemed very tense and angry before the gig, and even more so after. Nobody had an especially good word to say about things, the best was ‘it was OK, acceptable’, the worst ‘I have never been so disappointed in my entire life’. If it wasn’t for the audience though, tonight would have been absolutely pointless, and the excitement before the gig was second to none.
4/5

Overall

A disappointing performance from an already mediocre band, if your going to do a secret gig, do one, if not, don’t. It felt like they couldn’t be bothered, people had come down from London and Bournemouth in my group of friends alone to see them, the least they could have done was a 45 min set. OK it was only a fiver, but Mum were playing down the road, and I missed them for this.

disagree, i was there and found it quite a buzz; Gaz looked a bit older than I remember but for just a Guitar and Drums it was tip-top. Good Work Diamond Hoo Ha Men!!!
