I’m from Barcelona live review
I’m from Barcelona played the Concorde 2 in Brighton on Monday July 16th 2007. I met up with Johan from the band at their performance at the Latitude Festival 2 days earlier and he sorted us out with tickets so along we went. If you don’t already know, Im from Barcelona are a collective of around 30 people from Sweden who got together to record an album of happy childlike songs and are did a couple of gigs last year. Now they have parred down slightly and are doing a full scale tour which saw them onstage with the Flaming Lips the night before in Glasgow – quite a feat considering they were in Suffolk on the Saturday.
The band seem to contain a high proportion of very happy people, many of whom would be best described as looking somewhat geeky. Just as they did at Latitude they arrived on stage having first filled the place with giant and not so giant balloons and confetti. They managed to keep the party atmosphere up throughout the gig, despite the Concorde being only half full, a real shame as I’m sure many more people would have enjoyed this if they’d heard of the band/made the effort to go. In fact it must be impossible not to enjoy this band live.
Highlights, of which there were many, included a full audience participation section where the band invited everyone who had purchased a kazoo earlier in the evening onto the stage to perform a refrain from a song about building a treehouse. Toward the end of the evening the band gave many people in the front row handfuls of confetti to be thrown once the signal was given. Some naughty people threw them early, got given more, and threw again, but most people just waited and after a count of ten the whole place exploded with confetti (much more than I’m sure I saw them give out bizarrely), it was like a wonderful New Years eve party! The gig closed with Johan leading a conga round the venue, which everyone seemed to get involved in whilst a dance remix of ‘we’re from Barcelona’ played in the background. Truly a must see band.
